FIFA World Cup 2026: Group stage reaches boiling point as round of 32 takes shape

  • KATHMANDU — The 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage has officially reached its final, high-stakes matchday. With the newly expanded 48-team format, the calculations have never been more intense: 32 teams will progress to the knockout rounds, consisting of the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, alongside the eight best third-placed finishers.

    As Matchday 3 kicks off, a handful of powerhouse nations have already mathematically secured their places in the Round of 32, while others are entirely eliminated or left fighting for survival.

    Teams already qualified

    Seven nations have already stamped their tickets to the knockout phase with a game to spare after dominant displays in their opening two matches:

    • Mexico (Group A)

    • Current status: Brazil and Morocco sit in strong positions following their 1-1 draw, alongside Scotland who picked up a vital win over the already-eliminated Haiti.

    • Prospective qualifiers: Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland are all highly prospective candidates to advance from this section.

    • Current standings: USA (Qualified), Australia, Paraguay, Turkey (Eliminated).

    • Prospective qualifiers: With the USA through and Turkey out, Australia and Paraguay will face off in a direct battle to join the Americans in the next round.

    • Current status: Germany is through to the next round. Côte d’Ivoire holds an edge after defeating Ecuador, while Curaçao lags behind.

    • Prospective qualifiers: Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador are the primary contenders battling it out for the automatic second-place spot behind the Germans.

    • Current status: The Netherlands and Japan are leading the charge after their entertaining 2-2 draw, while Sweden remains a threat and Tunisia is out.

    • Prospective qualifiers: Following a 0-0 draw between England and Ghana, and a Croatia win over the eliminated Panama, this group is completely wide open. England, Ghana, and Croatia all control their own destiny.

    The Third-Place wild cards: Who is in danger?

    The top two teams from all 12 groups automatically advance (24 teams). The remaining 8 spots are filled by ranking the 12 third-placed teams by points, goal difference, and goals scored.

    If the tournament ended right now, the four teams that would narrowly miss out on the Round of 32 as the worst third-placed teams are:

    1. Bosnia and Herzegovina

    2. Ecuador

    3. Senegal

    4. DR Congo

    The other eight third-placed teams would miraculously advance, meaning almost every team currently sitting in 3rd place still has everything to play for on the final day of the group stage.
