Human Rights orientation held for filmmakers in Kathmandu

Kathmandu — The Human Rights Film Center, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Film Development Board, and the Film Directors Society of Nepal, organized a human rights orientation program for filmmakers in Kathmandu.

Murari Kharel, Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, delivered a special presentation on fundamental human rights principles, including freedom of expression, gender equality, children’s rights, the right to privacy, and non-discrimination. He urged filmmakers to help foster a culture that respects human rights through cinema.

NHRC member Lily Thapa highlighted the important role of art and culture in the protection and promotion of human rights. She encouraged filmmakers to view social issues from a rights-based perspective and to use their creative works to convey positive messages.

Directors, producers, writers, and actors participating in the program emphasized that cinema is not merely a means of entertainment but also a powerful tool for social transformation.

Participants also voiced concerns over unnecessary censorship when addressing social issues in films and stressed the need to safeguard creative freedom.

Representatives from various film organizations and members of the film community attended the event. Pandav Khatri, Chairperson of the Human Rights Film Center, expressed confidence that the power of cinema could bring positive change in the field of human rights.
