Karnali Yaks Stun Star-Studded Janakpur Bolts in 19-Run NPL Thriller
KIRTIPUR, KATHMANDU — The Nepal Premier League (NPL) delivered another prime-time spectacle under the lights at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground, as the Karnali Yaks successfully defended a modest total to defeat the Janakpur Bolts by 19 runs.
In a match dominated by the bowlers, Karnali’s disciplined attack managed to silence a Janakpur lineup packed with international firepower, bowling them out for 113 in 19.3 overs to seal their first victory of Season 3.
Ariful Islam Anchors Karnali’s Innings
The evening began with Janakpur Bolts’ captain winning the toss and electing to field first, hoping to utilize the early bowling conditions. The decision looked brilliant initially, as the Bolts’ bowlers struck at regular intervals.
However, Karnali found their savior in Ariful Islam, who played a counter-attacking knock of 43 from just 29 deliveries, beautifully supported by Pawan Sarraf’s grinding 37 off 37 balls. Their crucial middle-order partnership pushed the Karnali Yaks to a defendable 132/9 in their 20 overs.
For the Bolts, captain Harmeet Singh led from the front with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for just 22 runs, while Moeen Ali and Rahul Yadav chipped in with two wickets each to restrict the Yaks from running away with the score.
International Stars Falter in the Chase
Chasing 133, Janakpur was expected to cruise, especially with global T20 stars like Moeen Ali and James Neesham in their ranks. But the Karnali Yaks had other plans.
The Yaks’ bowling unit, orchestrated brilliantly by Unish Thakuri (Singh) and Hussain Talat, dismantled the Bolts’ batting order. Janakpur struggled to build any meaningful partnerships. Moeen Ali and Harmeet Singh both managed 19 runs, while Jimmy Neesham was sent packing for just 15. Late fireworks from Abhishek Tiwari, who top-scored for Janakpur with a quick-fire 20 off 17 balls, briefly kept the Bolts in the hunt, but it was too little, too late.
Unish Thakuri’s Match-Winning Spell
Unish Thakuri was the undisputed hero of the night for Karnali, delivering a blistering spell to claim 3 for 22 in his four overs, earning him the Player of the Match award. Hussain Talat matched the intensity, also taking 3 wickets for 26 runs, while Nandan Yadav tightened the screws with 2 for 13.
The Janakpur Bolts’ chase ultimately folded at 113 in the final over, as Nandan Yadav shattered Lalit Rajbanshi’s stumps to spark massive celebrations in the Karnali dugout. The Yaks’ emphatic 19-run victory proves that in T20 cricket, disciplined bowling and sheer grit can overcome the biggest names on the field.
