Khadka Faction to Accept Supreme Court Verdict on Nepali Congress Legitimacy

KATHMANDU — The faction of the Nepali Congress led by Purna Bahadur Khadka has decided to accept the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the party’s official legitimacy. The decision was reached during an informal meeting held today at Khadka’s residence in Golfutar.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, leader Min Vishwakarma stated that despite having significant grounds for dissatisfaction and viewing several aspects of the verdict as “contradictory and controversial,” the faction has chosen to respect the judiciary’s final word.

“Nepali Congress has always been raised in the tradition of embracing the rule of law and the principle of separation of powers,” Vishwakarma said. “Therefore, we have concluded that we will accept the court’s decision, even though we are dissatisfied with it.”

The legal battle concluded on Friday, April 17, when a division bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Nripadhwoj Niraula dismissed the writ petitions filed by former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka. The court upheld the Election Commission’s earlier decision to grant official recognition to the Central Working Committee led by Gagan Thapa, which emerged from a special general convention held in mid-January.

Vishwakarma noted that today’s discussions were informal and aimed at gathering suggestions from leaders across the country. He emphasized that the focus will now shift toward party unity. “We consulted on how to lead the party in a unified manner in the coming days. It will take some time to listen to all our colleagues and reach a final conclusion,” he added.

The Khadka faction is scheduled to continue its informal consultations tomorrow, Sunday, to map out its future course within the officially recognized party structure.
