Public Urged to Stay Calm: HMPV is a Common Cold Virus, Not a Cause for Panic

  • KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has clarified that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), recently reported in China, is a common virus and has urged the public not to panic.

In an official statement, the ministry addressed rumors circulating on various media platforms and social networks, dismissing them as misleading propaganda. The ministry emphasized that HMPV is not a new virus and is typically associated with respiratory infections that naturally increase during the winter months.

“This virus causes the common cold and has been observed in Nepal in the past. Nepal has the necessary capacity for testing, monitoring, and responding to it,” the ministry stated.

The ministry reassured the public that the risk of severe complications from HMPV is low, with vulnerable groups such as those with weak immunity, young children, and the elderly being more susceptible to infection.

To address the situation, the government has strengthened surveillance and monitoring through the Ministry of Health, the Department of Health Services, the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, hospitals, and laboratories.

The ministry advised the public to adhere to personal safety measures, such as:

    • Wearing masks and avoiding crowded places.
    • Practicing proper hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water.
    • Avoiding close contact with infected individuals.

For those experiencing health problems, the ministry recommended seeking medical advice at hospitals and contacting the Hello Health Call Center at 1115 for consultations.

The ministry also reminded the public to follow public health standards for all infectious diseases, including HMPV and similar conditions, and to stay informed through reliable sources.
