World Cancer Day: 95% of Cancer Cases are Treatable in Nepal
Kathmandu – Nepal is observing World Cancer Day today with various awareness programs across the country. February 4 is marked globally to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention, and treatment options.
Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that, if left untreated, can spread throughout the body, making treatment more complicated. However, early detection can lead to complete recovery, say medical experts.
Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups for early detection and prevention.
According to Dr. Arun Shahi, a senior oncologist at Patan Academy of Health Sciences, cancer can be categorized into four stages. He stated, “Cancers diagnosed at stages 0 to 3 are fully curable, while stage 4 cancer can be managed and controlled.”
Similarly, Dr. Ujjwal Chalise, director of Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, reported that 95% of cancer cases in Nepal can be treated. He added that Nepal offers affordable cancer treatment compared to global standards, especially in government hospitals.
Rising Cancer Cases in Nepal
A study by Globocan indicates that over 20,000 new cancer cases are reported in Nepal each year. The most common types include:
- In Men: Lung, stomach, intestine, oral, and thyroid cancer
- In Women: Cervical, breast, lung, gallbladder, and ovarian cancer
Government Support for Cancer Patients
The Nepalese government has launched various awareness and financial aid programs to assist cancer patients. The Poor Citizens Medical Treatment Fund provides up to NPR 100,000 for cancer treatment, while provincial governments offer additional NPR 100,000 in support.
Medical experts stress that lifestyle choices, tobacco and alcohol consumption, diet, radiation exposure, bacterial infections, and genetic factors are major causes of cancer. With early diagnosis and timely medical intervention, the majority of cancer cases in Nepal are treatable.
